YarnSteps

Your first crochet project doesn't need to be a scarf, blanket, or anything that takes days to finish.

This little Meadow Bookmark is designed to teach you the basics through one small project you can actually use.

You'll practice making a chain, working single crochet into rows, turning your work, and finishing your yarn. At the end, we'll add a tiny leaf-shaped detail to make the bookmark feel special.

Skill level: Complete beginner
Terms: US crochet terminology
Main stitch: Single crochet
Construction: Worked flat in rows

Before You Crochet

You'll need:

  • Light cotton yarn
  • 4 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

For your first attempt, choose a light-colored yarn.

Very dark yarn can make individual loops harder to see when you're still learning.

We're going to use only two basic abbreviations:

ch = chain
sc = single crochet

These are standard US crochet abbreviations.

Step 1 — Make Your Foundation Chain

Make a slip knot and place it on your hook.

Now:

Ch 7.

Don't pull each chain extremely tight.

You want the hook to move comfortably through the loops.

Look at your chain before continuing. It should resemble a short braided cord.

Quick check

Count the chains.

You should have 7.

If you have more or fewer, this is the easiest moment to correct it.

Step 2 — Make the First Row

Skip the chain closest to your hook.

Insert your hook into the second chain from the hook.

Yarn over and pull the yarn through the chain.

You now have two loops on your hook.

Yarn over again and pull through both loops.

That's your first single crochet.

Repeat in each remaining chain.

At the end you should have:

6 sc.

The Craft Yarn Council uses sc for single crochet in US terminology.

Step 3 — Learn the Repeat

Now the project becomes much easier.

At the end of the row:

Ch 1 and turn.

Work:

1 sc in each of the 6 stitches.

When you reach the end:

Ch 1 and turn again.

Repeat the same row.

You're not learning a new technique anymore—you're practicing the one you just learned.

Step 4 — Decide the Length Yourself

Continue crocheting:

Ch 1, turn, 6 sc.

Instead of counting dozens of rows, occasionally place the strip beside a book.

Stop when the bookmark is approximately as long as the book's page height, while leaving a small portion visible below the book.

This teaches an important crochet skill:

not every useful measurement has to come from a fixed row count.

Different yarn, hooks, and individual tension can change the finished size.

When you're happy with the length, fasten off and weave in the yarn tail.

Step 5 — Add the Tiny Leaf

Now we'll give your first project a small decorative finish.

Using dusty-rose yarn:

Ch 7.

Starting in the second chain from the hook, work:

sl st, sc, hdc, hdc, sc, sl st.

Fasten off.

This creates a small tapered shape.

Use the yarn tail to attach it securely to one end of the bookmark.

Your First Project Is Finished

Place the bookmark between two pages.

The narrow crochet strip should sit flat without creating too much bulk.

You just practiced several fundamental crochet skills in one tiny project:

making a foundation chain, single crochet, turning rows, maintaining stitch count, fastening off, and attaching a decorative piece.

Don't worry if the sides aren't perfectly straight yet.

The goal of your first project isn't perfection.

It's understanding what your hands are doing well enough to make the second project easier than the first.
