Meet Lumi the Little Star Keeper, a tiny fantasy friend who carries a soft crochet star wherever she goes.

Lumi has a simple rounded head, a small body, short droplet-shaped ears, tiny arms and feet, and a sweet embroidered face. Her simple construction makes this project a lovely choice if you already know the basics of amigurumi and want to practice making a complete character.

The finished design is intentionally simple, with only a few separate pieces to crochet and assemble.

What You’ll Need

For Lumi, you’ll need:

  • Warm cream yarn for the main character
  • Pale peach yarn for the inner ears
  • Pastel blue yarn for the little star
  • A small amount of pink yarn for the cheeks
  • Dark brown embroidery thread
  • Crochet hook suitable for your yarn
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors

A smooth cotton or cotton-blend yarn works especially well because it keeps the stitches visible and gives the finished character a neat shape.

Crochet the Head

Begin with the warm cream yarn.

R1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)
R2: inc around (12)
R3: (sc, inc) × 6 (18)
R4: (2 sc, inc) × 6 (24)
R5: (3 sc, inc) × 6 (30)
R6: (4 sc, inc) × 6 (36)
R7–12: sc around (36)
R13: (4 sc, dec) × 6 (30)
R14: (3 sc, dec) × 6 (24)

Start adding stuffing gradually.

R15: (2 sc, dec) × 6 (18)
R16: (sc, dec) × 6 (12)

Finish stuffing until the head feels softly rounded. Avoid packing it too tightly, as this can stretch the stitches.

Fasten off and leave a long yarn tail for assembly.

Make the Body

Using cream yarn:

R1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)
R2: inc around (12)
R3: (sc, inc) × 6 (18)
R4: (2 sc, inc) × 6 (24)
R5–9: sc around (24)
R10: (2 sc, dec) × 6 (18)
R11–12: sc around (18)

Stuff the body gradually, keeping the bottom comfortably rounded.

Fasten off and leave a long tail.

Make Lumi’s Ears

Make two matching outer ears with cream yarn.

Start with a small magic ring and increase until you have a narrow rounded shape. Continue several rounds without increasing, then gradually decrease toward the top.

The ears should remain relatively short and soft rather than long like traditional bunny ears.

Create two smaller pale-peach pieces and sew one onto the inside of each cream ear.

Lightly flatten the completed ears. They do not need heavy stuffing.

Crochet the Arms

Make two.

Start with 6 sc in a magic ring. Increase slightly to create a rounded hand, then work several rounds evenly to form a short arm.

Add only a tiny amount of stuffing to the lower portion.

Flatten the opening and leave a yarn tail for sewing.

Crochet the Feet

Make two small rounded feet in cream yarn.

Begin with 6 sc in a magic ring and increase evenly until the piece forms a small circle. Work a few rounds without increasing and add a little stuffing.

The two feet should be as similar in size as possible so Lumi can sit or stand evenly

Make the Little Star

Use pastel blue yarn.

Crochet a small flat center first, then create five short points around its edge.

Make a second matching star.

Place the two pieces together and sew around the edges. Before closing the final section, add just a tiny amount of fiberfill.

Finish sewing and weave in the yarn end.

The finished star should remain small enough to fit comfortably between Lumi’s hands.

Embroider the Face

The face gives Lumi most of her personality, so take a little time before making permanent stitches.

Use dark brown embroidery thread to create two gently curved closed eyes.

Add a tiny curved smile between them.

For the cheeks, embroider two small pink circles below the eyes.

Before securing the thread, look at the face from a short distance to make sure both sides appear balanced.

Assemble Lumi

Start by sewing the head firmly onto the body.

Next, position the ears on opposite sides of the head. Pinning them temporarily can help you compare their height and angle before sewing.

Attach the arms to the upper sides of the body and position the feet underneath.

Finally, place the blue star against Lumi’s belly and gently bring the arms toward it. Sew the star securely in place without pulling the arms too tightly.

Weave all remaining yarn tails safely into the doll.

Finishing Touches

Add a small curled tuft of cream yarn to the top of Lumi’s head if you want an extra playful detail.

Check the character from the front, sides, and back. Adjust any loose pieces before securing your final knots.

Your finished Lumi should feel softly stuffed, with a rounded silhouette and relaxed little arms holding the star.

Make Lumi Your Own

Once you understand the basic construction, you can easily create different versions.

Try lavender, mint, dusty pink, or pale yellow for the little star. You can also change the inner-ear color while keeping the cream body the same.

Because the face is embroidered by hand, every Lumi will naturally have a slightly different expression.

Final Thoughts

Lumi the Little Star Keeper combines several useful amigurumi skills in one manageable project: crocheting in the round, increasing, decreasing, stuffing, embroidery, making small pieces, and assembling a character.

Take your time with the placement of the face and accessories. Small differences are part of the charm of handmade crochet, and your finished Lumi will have a personality of its own.
