Willow Mug Pocket Cozy – Easy Crochet Project for Beginners
A small crochet project can completely change the feel of an everyday object.
The Willow Mug Pocket Cozy is a soft ribbed wrap made for a handled mug, with a tiny front pocket that can hold a wrapped tea bag. It is simple enough for a beginner, but it also teaches useful skills such as measuring, crocheting straight rows, working in the back loop, and sewing pieces neatly together.
Instead of following one fixed size, you will make the cozy to fit your own mug.
Skill level: Beginner
Crochet terms: US terminology
Main stitch: Single crochet
Construction: Flat ribbed wrap + small pocket + button closure
Measure Your Mug First
Before picking up your crochet hook, measure the mug you want to use.
This is important because mugs come in many different shapes and sizes.
Use a flexible measuring tape to measure around the widest part of the mug. Do not include the handle in this measurement.
Next, measure the height you want the cozy to cover.
Leave some uncovered ceramic near both the top and bottom. The crochet should never interfere with drinking from the mug or make the mug unstable when placed on a table.
Write down both measurements.
Don't worry about getting a particular number. We will use the measurements to make the project fit your mug.
Materials
For this project you'll need:
- Worsted-weight cotton yarn in sage green
- Small amount of cream cotton yarn
- Small amount of dusty-rose yarn
- 4–4.5 mm crochet hook
- One small button
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Stitch markers
Cotton works especially well because it creates a firm fabric with clearly defined stitches.
Abbreviations
ch — chain
sc — single crochet
BLO — back loop only
sl st — slip stitch
FO — fasten off
Make a Small Test Swatch
Instead of immediately making the entire cozy, start with a small test.
Using sage yarn:
Ch 13.
Row 1
Starting in the second chain from your hook:
12 sc.
Turn.
Row 2
Ch 1.
Work 1 sc in the back loop only (BLO) of every stitch.
You should still have:
12 stitches.
Turn.
Repeat Row 2 for approximately 6 rows.
You should begin seeing narrow raised ribs running across the fabric.
Hold the swatch against your mug vertically.
If the swatch is taller than the area you measured, undo it and begin with fewer chains.
If it is too short, begin again with a few additional chains.
Once the height looks right, you have found the correct starting chain for your mug.
Crochet the Main Wrap
Continue repeating:
Ch 1, turn, sc BLO across.
The number of stitches in each row stays the same.
As you add rows, your rectangle becomes longer while maintaining the same height.
Every few rows, stop and wrap the piece around your mug.
Continue until both short ends approach each other beside the handle.
They should not overlap heavily.
Leave enough space around the handle for your fingers.
The fabric should fit snugly but shouldn't need to be stretched hard to reach both sides.
Once you're happy with the fit:
FO and weave in the yarn end.
Crochet the Little Tea Pocket
Now we'll make the cream pocket.
Using cream yarn:
Ch 9.
Row 1
Starting in the second chain from your hook:
8 sc.
Turn.
Rows 2–7
Ch 1, 8 sc.
Turn after every row.
You now have a small rectangle.
Before fastening off, crochet evenly down one side, across the bottom, and up the other side.
This creates a cleaner edge.
Do not close the top.
FO and leave a long yarn tail for sewing.
Check the Pocket
Place a wrapped tea bag over the pocket.
The top part of the tea bag should remain visible so it can easily be removed.
If your tea bags are much larger than the pocket, add another row or make the starting chain slightly longer.
Sew the Pocket in Place
Wrap the sage cozy around your mug.
Find the section roughly opposite the handle.
That's where the pocket should sit.
Remove the cozy from the mug and lay it flat.
Center the cream pocket on that area and secure it temporarily with pins.
Thread the long cream yarn tail through your yarn needle.
Sew down the left side, continue across the bottom, then sew up the right side.
Leave the top completely open.
Remove the pins and test the pocket with a wrapped tea bag.
Add a Button Closure
Because the mug has a handle, we don't want to permanently join the ends of the cozy.
A simple button closure solves this.
Place the cozy around your mug again.
On one short end, decide where the button will sit.
Remove the cozy and sew the button securely through several stitches.
Don't sew only through one yarn strand; anchor it firmly into the crochet fabric.
Now attach dusty-rose yarn to the opposite short edge.
Make a chain long enough to pass around your button.
Test the chain before closing the loop.
It should stretch gently around the button without pulling the cozy too tightly.
Once the length is correct, slip stitch the chain back to its starting point.
FO and weave in the ends.
Check the Fit
Fasten the finished cozy around the mug.
Now check it from every side.
The upper edge should sit below the rim.
The lower edge should stay above the bottom of the mug.
The handle should remain easy to hold.
The button shouldn't press awkwardly against your fingers.
Finally, place a wrapped tea bag into the pocket.
If everything sits comfortably, the construction is finished.
Want a Different Look?
The construction can stay the same while the appearance changes completely.
For a calm neutral version, try oatmeal yarn with a cream pocket.
For a spring version, use dusty pink with a sage pocket.
For a cottage-style version, make the main wrap cream and use leftover yarn to add a narrow colored border.
You can also leave the pocket off completely if you want an even simpler first project.
What You Practiced
Although this is a small project, you practiced several useful crochet skills:
- Working straight rows
- Single crochet
- Back-loop-only crochet
- Measuring instead of relying entirely on stitch counts
- Creating ribbed texture
- Sewing one crochet piece onto another
- Making a simple chain-loop closure
Most importantly, you learned how to adjust a crochet project to fit a real object.
Once all yarn tails are hidden securely, your Willow Mug Pocket Cozy is ready.
