Meet Pippo, a tiny sleepy creature who loves carrying a little star wherever he goes.

Pippo has a soft round body, two tiny arms, short feet, a curled moon-shaped hood, and a miniature hanging star. His simple construction uses basic amigurumi techniques, while the small details give him a magical storybook personality.

This project is a fun choice for crocheters who know the basic stitches and want to make something a little different from traditional animal amigurumi.

What You’ll Need

Pippo is made from only a few colors, so this is also a useful project for leftover yarn.

You’ll need:

  • Warm ivory yarn for the body
  • Dusty blue yarn for the moon hood
  • Golden yellow yarn for the star
  • A tiny amount of pink yarn for the cheeks
  • Dark brown embroidery thread
  • Crochet hook suitable for your yarn
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors

Smooth cotton or cotton-blend yarn will help the small details keep their shape.

Crochet Pippo’s Body

Unlike many amigurumi characters, Pippo doesn't need a separately crocheted head. The head and body are worked as one continuous piece, which makes assembly easier.

Using ivory yarn:

R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: inc × 6 (12)
R3: (1 sc, inc) × 6 (18)
R4: (2 sc, inc) × 6 (24)
R5: (3 sc, inc) × 6 (30)
R6: (4 sc, inc) × 6 (36)
R7–12: sc around (36)
R13: (4 sc, dec) × 6 (30)
R14: sc around (30)
R15: (3 sc, dec) × 6 (24)
R16–18: sc around (24)

Begin adding fiberfill gradually.

R19: (2 sc, dec) × 6 (18)
R20: (1 sc, dec) × 6 (12)
R21: dec × 6 (6)

Finish stuffing before closing the opening.

Shape the upper section gently with your hands so it remains round while the lower section is slightly narrower.

Make the Tiny Arms

Make two using ivory yarn.

R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: sc around (6)
R3–5: sc around (6)

Add only a small amount of stuffing near the rounded end.

Flatten the open end gently and leave a long yarn tail for sewing.

The arms should remain short so the finished character keeps its compact shape.

Make the Feet

Make two.

R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
R2: inc × 6 (12)
R3: sc around (12)
R4: (2 sc, dec) × 3 (9)

Stuff each foot lightly.

Before sewing, position both feet underneath the body and make sure Pippo can sit steadily.

Crochet the Moon Hood

The dusty-blue moon hood is the detail that gives Pippo his distinctive appearance.

Begin with a chain and work back and forth to create a long curved crochet strip. Gradually increase near the center and decrease toward both ends.

The finished piece should resemble a soft crescent, not a complete hat.

Place it along one side of Pippo’s face and curve the upper section gently over the top of the head.

Don't sew it immediately. Pin it first and check that it frames the face without covering the eyes.

Make Pippo’s Tiny Star

Use golden-yellow yarn.

Start with a small magic ring and crochet a compact center. Create five short points around the center, keeping each point approximately the same size.

Make a second matching star and place the two pieces together.

Sew around the edges, adding just a tiny pinch of stuffing before closing.

Attach a short dusty-blue yarn cord to the top of the star. The cord only needs to be long enough for the star to hang naturally beside Pippo's hand.

Add the Sleepy Face

Before embroidering, use two pins to test the position of the eyes.

Embroider two small curved closed eyes with dark brown thread. Keep enough space between them so the expression doesn't look crowded.

Add a tiny curved smile underneath.

Two small pink embroidered cheeks complete the expression.

Avoid making the facial details too large—the simple face is part of Pippo's character.

Assemble Pippo

Start with the feet. Pin them underneath the body and check that they are level before sewing securely.

Next, attach the arms to the sides of the body.

Position the moon hood around the upper section. Adjust the curve until it frames the face naturally, then sew it down with small hidden stitches.

Attach the blue cord to one arm so the tiny star hangs beside Pippo rather than directly in front of the body.

Finally, weave all loose yarn ends securely inside the doll.

Finishing Touches

Gently shape the body with your fingers and adjust the moon hood.

Check Pippo from the front, sides, and back. The hood should follow the curve of the body without looking tight, while the little star should hang freely.

If the feet aren't sitting evenly, reposition them before making your final stitches.

Try Different Night-Sky Colors

Once you've made your first Pippo, you can experiment with different combinations.

Try a lavender moon hood with a pale-yellow star, a sage-green hood with a cream star, or reverse the original colors.

Keep the body neutral and change only the accessories, and you can create a whole collection while using exactly the same basic pattern.

Final Thoughts

Pippo is designed to look distinctive without requiring lots of complicated pieces. The one-piece body reduces sewing, while the crescent hood and hanging star add enough detail to make the finished character special.

Take your time when positioning the face and moon hood. Small changes in their placement can give each finished Pippo a slightly different personality.
