Pattern Notes

  • The pencil case body is crocheted as one shaped piece.
  • Work back and forth in rows.
  • The tutorial uses ch 1 and turn between normal sc rows.
  • The turning ch-1 is treated as a turning chain only in this written version because the tutorial continues to state the same sc stitch totals for each row.
  • Pay attention to the first and last stitch to keep the edges straight.

Cut the yarn and fasten off.

Weave in the yarn ends.

Add the Fabric Lining

Lay the finished crochet piece flat.

Place your lining fabric over or underneath the crochet body.

Cut the fabric so that it follows the general shape of the crocheted piece.

Position the fabric on the inside/wrong side of the crochet piece.

Using a sewing needle and thread, hand sew the lining securely around the edges.

Take care to keep your stitches neat and avoid pulling the crochet fabric out of shape.

Attach the Zipper

Fold the crochet piece into its pouch shape with the inside facing outward.

Position the zipper along the top opening.

The zipper should be placed so that its right side will face outward when the pencil case is turned right-side out.

Pin or clip the zipper into position.

Hand sew one side of the zipper securely to one crochet edge.

Then sew the opposite side of the zipper to the other crochet edge.

Make sure the zipper can open and close freely before continuing.

A zipper long enough to reach across the full opening is preferable.

Sew the Main Sides

Keep the pouch turned inside out.

Align the edges carefully.

Sew the corresponding side sections together.

Repeat on the opposite side.

Make sure both sides are secure.

Shape the Four Corners

The construction creates four small corner openings.

For each corner:

  1. Open and flatten the corner.

  2. Align the opening so it forms a straight seam.

  3. Sew straight across the opening.

  4. Secure the seam firmly.

Repeat this process for all four corners.

This creates the dimensional pouch shape.

Finishing

Open the zipper.

Carefully turn the pencil case right-side out through the zipper opening.

Push out and shape the corners gently.

Straighten the lining.

Check all seams.

Weave in or trim any remaining threads.

Your crochet pencil case is complete.

Optional Decoration

The tutorial leaves the finished pouch plain but suggests that it can also be decorated.

You could add optional crochet embellishments such as:

  • A small flower

  • A heart

  • A star

  • A bow

  • Initials

  • A small applique

The pouch can be used as either a:

Pencil Case

or

Makeup Pouch

depending on your preferred use.
