Cute apricot fennec fox amigurumi with large ears and cream tail

Meet Nori, a tiny desert fox with enormous ears, a chubby little tummy, and a fluffy tail that curls around her side when she sits.

This pattern is designed to be cute rather than realistic. Nori has a large rounded head, very short arms and legs, oversized ears, and a compact body that can fit comfortably in your hand.

Most of the pattern uses single crochet, increases, and decreases, so it works well as a next amigurumi project once you're comfortable crocheting in continuous rounds.

Skill level: Confident beginner
Terminology: US crochet terms
Finished height: About 13–15 cm
Main stitch: Single crochet
Construction: Separate head, body, ears, limbs, muzzle, and tail

Color Palette

For this version, use:

  • Soft apricot — head and body
  • Warm cream — muzzle, belly, inner ears and tail tip
  • Cocoa brown — paw tips and embroidery
  • Dusty teal — tiny neck scarf
  • A small amount of muted pink for the cheeks

What You'll Need

You'll need:

  • Medium-weight smooth yarn
  • Crochet hook suitable for your yarn
  • Fiberfill
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch markers
  • Scissors
  • Dark embroidery yarn

Smooth yarn is especially useful for amigurumi because it makes increases and decreases much easier to recognize.

For a child-safe version, embroider all facial details instead of attaching removable plastic pieces.

Before You Begin

Nori's main pieces are worked in continuous rounds.

Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round and move it upward as you work.

You'll use:

sc — single crochet
inc — 2 single crochet in one stitch
dec — decrease
sl st — slip stitch

If you need more practice with the basic stitch, link How to Single Crochet for Beginners here.

Part 1: Crochet Nori's Head

Use soft-apricot yarn.

Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
Round 2: Inc around. (12)
Round 3: [1 sc, inc] × 6. (18)
Round 4: [2 sc, inc] × 6. (24)
Round 5: [3 sc, inc] × 6. (30)
Round 6: [4 sc, inc] × 6. (36)

Rounds 7–11: Sc around. (36)

Begin decreasing:

Round 12: [4 sc, dec] × 6. (30)
Round 13: [3 sc, dec] × 6. (24)
Round 14: [2 sc, dec] × 6. (18)

Start stuffing.

Use small pieces of fiberfill and shape the head gradually.

Round 15: [1 sc, dec] × 6. (12)

Fasten off with a long tail.

The oversized head is intentional. It gives Nori her pocket-sized kawaii appearance.

2: Make the Chubby Body

Use soft apricot.

Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
Round 2: Inc around. (12)
Round 3: [1 sc, inc] × 6. (18)
Round 4: [2 sc, inc] × 6. (24)
Round 5: [3 sc, inc] × 6. (30)

Rounds 6–10: Sc around. (30)

Now narrow the upper section:

Round 11: [3 sc, dec] × 6. (24)
Round 12: [2 sc, dec] × 6. (18)

Stuff the lower half first.

Keep the tummy round and full.

Round 13: [1 sc, dec] × 6. (12)

Fasten off with a long sewing tail.

Part 3: Make the Cream Muzzle

Use warm-cream yarn.

Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
Round 2: Inc around. (12)
Round 3: [1 sc, inc] × 6. (18)

Fasten off.

Add only a tiny amount of stuffing.

The muzzle should sit softly against the face rather than sticking far forward.

Don't sew it on yet.

Part 4: Crochet the Oversized Ears

The ears are the feature that makes Nori instantly recognizable as a fennec.

Make two with apricot yarn.

Round 1: 5 sc in a magic ring. (5)
Round 2: Inc around. (10)
Round 3: [1 sc, inc] × 5. (15)
Rounds 4–6: Sc around. (15)
Round 7: [1 sc, dec] × 5. (10)

Fasten off.

Do not stuff the ears.

Flatten them gently and pinch the lower edge slightly.

Using warm-cream yarn, embroider a simple inner-ear shape on the front of each ear.

Part 5: Make the Tiny Arms

Make two.

Start with cocoa brown.

Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
Round 2: Sc around. (6)

Change to soft apricot.

Rounds 3–6: Sc around. (6)

Add a tiny amount of stuffing.

Fasten off with a long tail.

Keep the arms short. Longer arms would make the character feel less compact.

Part 6: Make Two Rounded Feet

Make two.

Start with cocoa brown.

Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
Round 2: Inc around. (12)

Change to apricot.

Rounds 3–4: Sc around. (12)

Stuff lightly.

Flatten the upper edge and leave a long sewing tail.

Part 7: Crochet Nori's Big Tail

The tail should be almost as visually important as the ears.

Start with warm cream.

Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
Round 2: [1 sc, inc] × 3. (9)

Rounds 3–5: Sc around. (9)

Change to soft apricot.

Round 6: [2 sc, inc] × 3. (12)

Rounds 7–15: Sc around. (12)

Begin narrowing:

Round 16: [2 sc, dec] × 3. (9)

Rounds 17–19: Sc around. (9)

Stuff gradually, but keep it soft enough to curve.

Fasten off with a long tail.

Part 8: Make the Cream Tummy Patch

Using warm-cream yarn:

Chain 6.

Starting in the second chain, work:

  • 1 sc
  • 1 hdc
  • 1 dc
  • 1 hdc
  • several stitches into the last chain

Continue down the opposite side.

Work back toward the beginning with similar stitch heights.

Fasten off with a sewing tail.

You should have a small soft oval.

Part 9: Give Nori Her Face

Pin the cream muzzle slightly below the center of the head.

Now plan the eyes.

Embroider two small dark oval eyes a little above the muzzle.

Keep them moderately far apart to match the wide fennec face.

Embroider a tiny cocoa-brown nose in the center of the muzzle.

Add a short curved smile.

Finish with two small muted-pink cheek stitches.

Once you're happy with everything, sew the muzzle securely in place.

Part 10: Attach the Big Ears

Pin both ears high on the head.

Angle them slightly outward rather than perfectly vertical.

Look at Nori from the front before sewing.

One ear can lean just a tiny bit more than the other. That slight asymmetry often makes handmade characters look more expressive.

Secure each ear across several stitches.

Part 11: Assemble the Body

Sew the head firmly to the body.

Because the head is large, work around the entire neck join more than once if necessary.

Next:

  • Sew the cream belly patch to the front.
  • Attach the two short arms slightly toward the front.
  • Position the feet near the lower sides.
  • Attach the tail at the lower back.

Before completely securing the feet, place Nori on a flat table and make sure she can sit.

Part 12: Add the Tiny Scarf

Use dusty-teal yarn.

Chain enough stitches to wrap comfortably around Nori's neck.

Work one row of single crochet back across.

Fasten off.

Wrap the scarf once and let the ends sit slightly toward one side.

Keep it narrow so it doesn't cover the cream tummy patch or overwhelm the small body.

Final Check

Sit Nori on a flat surface.

Check that:

  • The large ears are firmly sewn.
  • The head doesn't wobble.
  • The feet support the sitting position.
  • The tail curves naturally beside the body.
  • Facial embroidery is secure.
  • No loose yarn tails remain.

Small differences between the ears or paws are fine.

Nori should look handmade, not machine-perfect.

Beginner Troubleshooting

Nori's ears fall backward

Sew across a slightly wider section at the base of each ear instead of tightening one stitch.

The head feels too heavy

Strengthen the neck seam rather than adding extra stuffing to the body.

The tail won't curve

You may have stuffed it too firmly. The tail should stay softer than the body.

Stuffing shows through the crochet

Reduce the stuffing and check your stitch tension. Link Crochet Tension for Beginners here.

The face doesn't look balanced

Pin the muzzle first, then embroider the eyes. Moving the eye position by even one stitch can change the whole expression.

Make Nori Your Own

Once you've completed the first version, experiment with a different palette:

dusty rose + cream + cocoa, or muted sage + oatmeal + charcoal.

You can also make the ears slightly shorter or leave off the scarf.

But keep Nori's signature features if you want the character to remain recognizable:

huge ears + oversized round head + tiny body + curled fluffy tail.
